Workshop “Experience Sampling Methods to Study Psychology in the Field”
DATE: 11 July 2025
LANGUAGE: English
DURATION: 9.00 - 17.00
LOCATION: TBA
TRAINER: Prof. Wilhelm Hofmann
Abstract
An important goal of many PhD projects is to better understand human experience and behavior as they occur in natural settings. A key field method for gaining detailed insights into everyday life phenomena is experience sampling. The goal of this one-day workshop is to provide participants with an overview of experience-sampling methods and practical guidance on when and how to apply them.
The first part of the workshop will familiarize participants with experience-sampling methods, offering an overview of typical methodological and design considerations. Drawing on examples from published research, we will discuss the advantages and potential applications of experience sampling, as well as its limitations.
The second part will focus on design decisions and implementation, guiding participants through the process of setting up an experience-sampling study.
In the third part, participants will form small groups to discuss how experience sampling could be applied to address a given research problem.
The final part of the workshop provides an introduction and practical exercise on how to analyze and visualize the multilevel data collected using this method in R.
To participate in the practical exercise, please bring your laptop and ensure that R and RStudio are installed prior to the workshop.
